Slow Cooker Sunday: My Top 5

slowcookingAs always, I’ve  been slow cooking this week.  But, it’s been one of those weeks, I’ve been so busy I don’t know if I’m coming or going and to be honest I’m starting to drop a few balls.

Nothing this week really stood out to blog about so I thought I would dig through the archive and share a few of my more popular recipes.  Weirdly, my most popular recipe is still the first Slow Cooker Recipe I ever posted ‘Green Thai Chicken Curry’ back in August 2010.

My top 5

Thai Green Chicken Curry – one of the most visited pages on my blog and if you want to have a go at your own paste check out the recipe on Just Annie QPR

Easy Slow Cooker Lamb Curry – yes it involves jars but it’s still worthy, but as a busy mum I’m always up for a cheat.

Abruzzi Lamb – perfect for a dinner party, I’ve served it time and time again and always gets rave reviews.

Butternut Squash and Chickpea Curry – for my veggie friends!

Pesto Salmon Bake – find me a kid that doesn’t love salmon.  Plus a bit of wine for mummy!

Now it’s your time to share.  There is a linky below;  recipes can be old or new and it doesn’t have to be your own recipe, just one that you know and love and have a website address.  Alternatively, you can email recipes to me mediocremum@gmail.com or leave your recipes in the comment section.

2012 Wasn’t That Bad Really

2012I was speaking with someone recently, who didn’t have the best start to the year.  She then said to me you haven’t had the best year either and if I stop and think about it, it wasn’t the best year but I’m not the kind of person to dwell on it.   We’ve had a few challenges this year but for the most part it’s been fairly positive.

The year started out as normal, enjoyed getting back into routine in January after all the Christmas festivities.  We were invited to a secret event in London hosted by Richard Branson.  I managed to persuade Helen from Actually Mummy to come with me.  As usual, Branson didn’t disappoint, we were privy to a rather impressive 3D projection on the Senate Building in London.

Then it all went horribly wrong in February.  My hubby was hit by a gritting lorry whilst cycling home from work and sustained substantial head injuries and ended up in a resuscitation unit in London.  We are incredibly lucky as he has pretty much made a full recovery.  This is not a phone call anyone loved one wants on a Friday night.

You’ll probably agree but it was about time we had a bit of luck.  In March, I won a trip to Copenhagen.

In April, we had the opportunity to take Madame to her First Ballet, My Sleeping Beauty, put on by the National Ballet!  It was truly magical. Unfortunately amidst all the magic, my hubby was made redundant and our daughter didn’t get her first choice of school so we would be losing our childminder she had since she was 4 months old.

I have never been so cold.  In May, we went Glamping in Shropshire.  It was great to get away and spend some family time together.

In June, the lovely Sheba invited us around her house for a Feast Through India.  The only way I can describe it is Come Dine with me but with Class.  The food was amazing and we met some lovely people.

This is the stuff dreams are made of….. Our daughter is 5 and was the perfect age for a trip to Eurodisney in July.

In August, we made our yearly trek to Canada to see my family.  We always have an amazing time; one of the highlights was Ziplining in Chase Canyon.

Madame, started school in September, luckily we caught it all on Camera as any good blogger would do.  Even, though she didn’t get her first choice of school we are incredibly happy where she is and she has settled in well with her new childminder.

In October, to celebrate our Anniversary we went to Copenhagen.  It was our first trip without our daughter, it was a bit of a logistical nightmare and we felt weird leaving her behind but we all had a great time.

As a Canadian, I grew up spending most of my time outdoors, predominantly in the woods.  So when I saw a Forest School advertised for school holidays in November we jumped at the chance.

Where did the time go, before we knew it was December?  I finally managed to have a proper catch up with a mate, whilst enjoying a spa day.

I was originally inspired by Laura from Yummy Mummy Flabby Tummy to write a year in review post after seeing hers.  However, I found it to be an incredibly useful activity to remind myself how fortunate we are and to be grateful for what we have.

As a family, we are looking forward to seeing what 2013 holds for us.  One big positive is that hubby starts work next week!  Yay!

Top 5 Movies from a 5 Year Old

I had a bit of a chat with my daughter last night as I was curious what her favourite movies were.  I was pleasantly surprised that many of her choices were the classics.  I know some of them can be a bit dark and I’m still personally scarred from when Bambi’s mother was shot by the hunter but I’d much prefer her to watch the classics than a lot of the crap that is on offer at the moment.

So without further adieu in reverse order:

Number 5 – The BFG by Roald Dahl  (1989)

“Whizz POP Whizz BANG!
Feel the bubbles go down!
Whizz BANG Whizz POP!
Bursting all around!”

A free BFG Activity pack to download

Number 4 – Bambi (1942)

Faster! Faster, Bambi! Don’t look back! Keep running! Keep running!
[Gunshot is heard, then silence] (Queue the tissues!)

Number 3 – Pinocchio (1940)

‘Mummy can you fast forward it to the part where Pinocchio comes alive as it’s my favourite bit?’

Number 2 – Snow White (1937)

Walt Disney’s first full length feature animation and still delivers!

Number 1 Cinderella (1950)

The prince and princess live happily ever after!  Need I say more?  Every little girls dream!

What is your favourite children’s movie of all time?

Top 5 Christmas Presents of 2011

Overall, I think we did fairly well on the present front, not too much tat. In a way, we are lucky that my family is overseas and posting presents is extortionate.  So they, tend to send money for me to buy presents for our daughter.  I really like this as it allows me to control what she gets and I tend to know what she needs/would like.  We did our best not to spoil her but in hindsight she did get a lot.  Here are her top 5 Christmas Presents.

Number 5

A Princess Tent from Santa, as a family we were torn on how to handle gifts from Santa.  Too be honest, we didn’t want him taking all the credit for our hard work.  At one point we were just going to have him bring the stocking, but in the end we decided one main present from him would be good.

The Princess Tent is designed for the garden but for the time being, we are going to keep it inside until the spring.  At first, I was a bit worried that it would be too small for her but boy was I wrong!  At the moment, it’s dominating our rather small lounge.  It was fairly easy to put together and you can feel the quality, the canvas cover is robust and the wooden frame is sturdy.  At the moment we haven’t secured it with the screws as we may want to put it up and down.  As you can see it’s gorgeous and I’m sure her and her friends will have fun playing in it.

Number 4

Kerplunk – a game that I loved to play as a child; it’s changed a bit but still great fun.  We’ve really been enjoying playing it as a family, but we’ve noticed that my daughter has a very competitive streak and likes to change the rules as we go along.  I think she gets this from her Grandmother who is fiercely competitive when it comes to games.

Number 3

My daughter’s main present, after a lot of thought, was a Puppet Theatre, but what I really like about this one is when you turn it around it turns into a shop.  At the moment she tends to prefer the shop.  We spent the evening playing Toy Store; however, I find her shop very expensive as everything costs £50 and she doesn’t take IOUs!

Number 2

Prior to Christmas, I tried to ask her what she wanted for Christmas and I really struggled to get something sensible out of her.  The last time I asked she said she would like a yellow dress, red handbag and pink bunny costume.  Luckily, a friend of mine who has a penchant for Prada and the colour red jumped in and offered to sort out the red hand bag. Phew!

Number 1

To go with her Puppet Theatre we bought a collection of Hand Puppets from the Puppet Company. As she is currently in a Princess phase we opted for Fairytale Characters.  As you can see they are absolutely gorgeous.  Mummy and daddy could use some work on their puppetry skills, but we are getting the hang of it.  Last night we did renditions of ‘we’re off to see the Wizard’, ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’, ‘if you want to be a Prince stand up tall’ and ‘I’m a Little Princess’ sung to the tune of I’m a Little Teapot.  We’re looking forward to many more productions.

Wishing you all the best in 2012!

Disclosure:  For the record Santa did not bring the Princess Tent.  It was a gift from the company.

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox

Available from itunes for 59p

I have to say that I really like this app, if you can ignore the annoying American accent.  I’d seen it recommended on a few websites and now that we’ve had a play with it I’m surprised the Sunday Times didn’t feature it in it’s Top 500 apps.  It’s perfect for Madame who is 3.5.  It has a combination of matching, sorting, colours, number and letter recognition and problem solving!

So overall here is what we thought:
