Selling Babies on E-bay!

When I was pregnant people were always asking if I knew if it was a boy or a girl.  My stock answer was always ‘if it’s a girl she’s going on E-bay’, which got a mixed response.  Please don’t jump down my throat and I do apologize if it comes across insensitive, especially to those of you who may have had fertility issues but this was how I felt at the time.

We’d only been looking at boys names so far.  I’m not sure what my aversion to having a girl was but I think the biggest reason may have been that I normally don’t get on as well with woman as men. A good male friend of mine says we get on so well because he’s a femine-male and I’m a masculine-female.  I’m sure he meant it as a compliment!  Plus, girls have that high-pitched squeal, they like shopping, hair, makeup and pink things all of which I don’t!

Anyhow, on the day of our 20 week scan we’d already decided that we wanted to know the sex of the baby.   So, I reclined on the bed, loosened my trousers and received the jelly belly treatment.  All seemed okay and then the technician asked if we wanted to know the sex of the baby and I said ‘yes’.

I can’t remember her exact words but she started describing two ovals and a long narrow……I thought for sure she was talking about a ‘boys’ meat and two veg’ and then she said ‘it’s a textbook example of a girl’.  The room fell silent, I really felt sorry for the technician.  After the initial shock, we hopped in the car headed home and the first text I sent was to my best friend asking how to register for E-Bay.

I think what made it even funnier was when I was being rolled back onto the ward after delivery.  We cruised past A-Bay, B-Bay, C-Bay etc and then slowed at E-Bay, luckily we were in F-Bay!

I probably don’t need to tell you that we wouldn’t change her for the world!

  1. Hahah, I had a standard answer like that when people asked if we knew what we were having: “I'm NOT having a boy”, “oh, so you're having a girl?”, “No, I'm just NOT having a boy!!”

    I'm having a girl ;)

  2. We're having a girl (in July), I really wanted a girl first as I'm an older sister and my husband has an older sister. Now I know the girl will be the first baby we can have boys boys boys!

  3. My ex and I decided we din't want to know our baby's sex, we really didn't care as long as he/she was healthy. Both sets of grandparents however wanted a girl; my mother because she already had 3 grandsons, and ex's mother because she just didn't want a boy, at all costs… They got their wish when out popped Phoebe Elizabeth! – Wouldn't change her for the world either, even though she now lives on the other bloody side of it! ;-)

  4. We did get our first wish too…healthy. When I told my mum she said not another effin girl (you have to know my mum to get her humour)! All her grandchildren are girls and I have 21 cousins on her side of the family all are girls except 3!

  5. And that's it exactly, isn't it? You get what you get, and wouldn't change them for the world. Though it would be interesting to see how much we would get for them on eBay, wouldn't it?!

  6. after having had 2 boys and the whole world asking me if I would be disappointed with another boy…..my response…actually I was hoping for a pony

  7. When anyone asked us if we knew what we were having (we didn't, and didn't want to) my stock answer was "well, a giraffe would be a surprise".

  8. With no girls for 4 generations in Mr Muddlings family we were convinced Toddlergirl would be a boy – it took Mr several weeks to get his mind around having a girl, for me it just seemed more normal to look after girls That said if we go for number three the thought of another girl does worry me

  9. With no 2 I definately didnt want a girl, been there done that and coped with teenage hormones.

The In-laws however wanted a girl and they wanted a girl called Helen! Unfortunately for them, I have a boy called Archie, but they love him anyway, and so does his big big sister who is off to uni in Sept (he is now 6) .
