Is There a Correct Way to Hang a Loo Roll?

I was a very strong believer that this was the correct way to hang a toilet roll, with the paper hanging down the back.  So much so, that if I came around to your house and you didn’t have one of those fancy or lock and key toilet roll holders I would switch yours around.  Do bear in mind that I’m the kind of person that will also straighten picture frames in other people’s houses.  I don’t know if it’s the Libra in me but everything has to be balanced.

However, I’ve been doing some very scientific research (Google) and discovered in fact that I may have been wrong.  Apparently, in addition to being more hygienic, it’s also more environmentally friendly, efficient and will make you a better person if you hang the loo roll with the sheet hanging over the top.

Reasons why:

  1. When it’s hanging down the back it touches the back recessed bit or the wall, where if we’re honest with ourselves, we never clean.  So, instead of cleaning yourself you are actually introducing more germs.  Yuck, yuck, yuck.
  2. This not something I don’t worry about that much, but I’ve read that over the top is much more conducive to one handed tearing???  Can someone please elaborate?
  3. It reduces the stress when trying to locate the end of the roll.  But, what if it’s a new roll and the first sheet is stuck in place with a bit of glue?  Mine ends up looking like a hamster’s bedding!
  4. It deters small people from unravelling the whole roll as there is less gravitational pull.
  5. And lastly, if you’re inclined to do so you can fold the ends hotel style.  However, if you do this you have far too much time on your hands.

Do you agree?  Is there a correct way to hang a toilet roll?

I like the loo roll hung the way you hang yours and yes I change it at other houses but only of people I know! I have an aunt who rushes in and makes those pointy ends on the roll but even I’m not that OCD!!

‘fraid to say you have been back to front all these years! (but then I used to sell loo rolls for a living ;) )

They should put the instructions for hanging on the back of the pack???

I’m the opposite, I ALWAYS have mine facing outwards, and would change other peoples so it’s hanging my way.

Oh this post made me smile. When I visit my parents or my inlaws house they always have the paper hanging towards the back like the picture and it bugs me SO much that I’m always changing it. On the rare occasions my husband changes the loo roll he always puts it the wrong way. Even looking at the photo brings me out in a sweat ;)
It’s pretty much the dame feeling I get when I see a plug socket turned on without a plug in it.

I grew up with it against the wall, but can see some advantage now to hanging the other way. But “it touches the wall” is a red herring; it does that whichever way it hangs! But we now do something I’ve not seen anyone else do: ours hangs like this…

(And, yes, we deliberately mounted the holder that way!)

Nooooo!!! you have to have it hanging away from the wall so you dont scrape your knuckles against the wall everytime you pull. Anyway it looks better the other way round

Never thought of the knuckle scraping, one more positive for over the top!

Yes, over the top like you’ve featured. I am anal (pardon the pun) and will also change other people’s toilet rolls!

It seems that over the top is winning!

I am like you – If I saw the roll the way you pictured it I would have to turn it – I think I just imagined it was cleaner, and, it is easier to tear off!!

Yes there is, and its under like the photograph.

I have certain people that visit and always change the way my loo roll is.

I even blogged about it too http://www.snafflesmummy.com/2009/09/bigger-questions-in-life-part-1.html

Not the way it is in the picture. If there is a pattern on the paper (which is wrong, but that’s another argument for another day) then hanging down against the wall shows the wrong side.

    1. mediocremum Avatar

      Hilarious…never thought of that!

  13. Mymumdom Avatar

I have to agree with google I’m afraid. Away from the wall every time but I’ve never done a hotel style end!

  14. geekmummy Avatar

I’m an over the top person, and yes I have been known to change rolls hung incorrectly (like your picture) in other people’s houses.

Isn’t it funny how we get all set in our ways about which way to hang loo roll.

Whilst we’re on the loo roll subject, are you a “folder” or a “scruncher”? ;)

Definitely over and I have been known to change people’s rolls too although I disagree with the unraveling I have seen my spinning out of control on many occasions with just a gentle touch. ;)

  16. PrincessL Avatar

The mere idea of it hanging your way gives me the shivvers (I had to scroll past the photo pretty quick!). Over the top is ALWAYS the way to go. I change peoples loo rolls round if they’re wrong!

Sorry, over for me too! The pointy thing is just weird though. Who on earth came up with that?
