I’ve cancelled my free subscription to Netflix

I’ve been waiting for ages for Netflix to come to the UK.  My family uses it in Canada and its brilliant being able to stream videos with the touch of a button.  So, when I heard an ad on the radio for it, I raced home and signed up even though having to register using my Facebook details annoyed me.

I was really thinking this was when my AppleTv as going to come into its own.  For those of you who aren’t aware what it is it’s a small wireless device that allows me to stream content (music, videos, etc) from my PC to our TV, I love it, but getting content can be a bit of a struggle unless you’re willing to fork out £9.99 to buy films from iTunes.

The Netflix service is excellent in itself;  it was easy to set up and when you compare the price of renting a single film from iTunes (£3.49) a subscription for £6 a month for unlimited films seemed like a bargain.

B-List Movies

But sadly, the content is very poor; I didn’t recognize many of the movies/TV programme nor was I inclined to watch many of them.

So, in the end I didn’t feel it was worth the monthly charge and cancelled it before I started accruing charges.

Fingers crossed the content improves and if it does I will be one of the first to sign up again.

Is Lovefilm any better?

In the meantime, Lovefilm is trying to compete and has launched their own streaming service, so I thought I’d try it out.  It’s £4.99 a month and the content is much improved.  However, I’m not able to stream to my TV.

I didn’t realise before I signed up that I wouldn’t be able to do this via my AppleTv.  I’d cracked how to use Airplay to watch content via my iPad, but sadly the Lovefilm App prohibits you from doing this with Lovefilm films.  The sound comes through but no movie.  I would love to know why.

Come on guys sort it out!

I find the whole situation frustrating, I can see that the technology is available to offer a service that I want and am willing to pay for, but we have two companies that are offering services that are substandard.

I’d love your thoughts on this.

  1. We cancelled LOVEFILM because there was never any movies we wanted to watch – all very well having millions of titles, but none that took our fancy unfortunately!

  2. I will probably cancel that subscription as well as I don’t tend to watch movies on the iPad as the screen is too small, but my daughter doesn’t seem to mind.

  3. We’ve only recently subscribed and I too have not been impressed by the selection – I suppose that’s what we get for £6 per month. A shame as it runs nicely through the Wii.

And it seems that if we want to enjoy a more up-to-date subscription, for which I don’t mind paying, the current Wii, TV with iPlayer and gubbins, etc is not enough – we need to buy some other piece of kit that is several hundred pounds. Not happening, despite the boy-child’s insistence that the PS3 or whatever it is would be well used…

For now I’ll make do with the laptop – I’m just about trusting that I’m not going to use up my allowance with one film (I can still hear the twiddly download sounds of a modem!).

    1. Someone suggested a Slingbox, but like you I’m not shelling out anymore money for more kit to watch movies.

  4. We’ve had Lovefilm for the DVDs for years and got offered 8 months free when I tried to cancel recently – turns out we get 4 hours of their on demand service each month which was worth a go

Interestingly I’ve managed to watch it on my ipad with no problems via their app – worth a go that way?

That said we’ll be cancelling Netflix – not enough content for me

    1. I can watch it on the iPad but I can’t stream it from the iPad to the TV??? Am I doing something wrong?

  5. We had a trial of lovefilm, which I cancelled since all the films seemed ancient. The streaming, via xbox 360, was impressive but the only film I remotely wanted to see was the rather old Mr Nice.

Netflix looks the same. TBH, you get what you pay for really, I can’t see how the pricing model can support brand new material. Netflix makes something like 10 times the profit out of a user who has a DVD sub compared to a streaming sub too.

  6. Interesting. I was just about to sign up for this Netflix as I thought it seemed a better deal than Lovefilm. So glad to have read this and saved myself the bother.

  7. So agree. I have it here in the New Jersey and I just cancelled the streaming. Nothing new to watch. We have these kiosks called Redbox where you can rent a movie for a dollar. Better than Netflix. I had Netflix for five years. They got too expensive and made you buy the streaming with the mail rental. People went nuts when they raised their prices.
