Iphone Apps for Kids: Pirate Trio Academy

Right from the start I liked the look of the Kids Iphone Apps ‘Love to Count‘ (£2.49) and ‘Shapes & Puzzles‘ (£1.99) from Pirate Trio Academy. Initially I thought they were a bit advanced for Madame, but then I noticed that the Shapes & Puzzles had a special module just for 3 year olds and she loves creating all the pictures using the shapes, great for fine motor skills and shape recognition.

Unfortunately, Love to Count is still a bit advanced for her as she is just coming up to 4 and it involves fractions, number bonds and ordinal numbers. This is not a fault of the developers but I’m sure she’ll grow into it in no time. It’s designed for 4-7 year olds but as an ex-teacher I think it may be more suitable for kids 6-8. It’s still a great app though.

I have 3 promo (free) codes for each of the apps available. It’s basically a first come first serve basis. Leave a comment for me below or tweet me telling me what app you’d like and some way of contacting you and I’ll get them straight over to you.

UPDATE:  ALL PROMO CODES ARE NOW GONE!

Iphone Apps for Kids

PianoBall – Fun with Learning (Available from Itunes for £1.19)

As an adult, I totally didn’t get this app at first!  My first instinct was to try and work out what you were supposed to do with it.  The mind boggled.   I hit the little ‘i’ and still none the wiser.  However, it’s similar to the philosophy of Poisson Rouge,

‘When small children pick up objects, they invent new ways of holding and using them. Thus there is no right or wrong way of using anything…… It’s up to the children to find what they want and to grow their naturally exploring mind’

Madame really likes this app; it introduces her to sounds, instruments and colours.  As a family, we aren’t musical, so I like that this app gives her an opportunity to explore music.  They also have built in differentiation with activities suitable for Babies, Toddlers and Pre Schoolers!  I like anything that grows with your child.

My only suggestion for the developers is that the back button is really fiddly.  I could barely do it.  Plus, it’s a wee bit pricey.  I’d be happy to pay 59p for it.

Overall this is what we thought

What does your iphone say about you?

My hubby was given a hand me down iphone3, which we were very grateful to receive. However, as usual I was left to sort it out. Bless him, he can barely send emails with attachments.

Long story short after nearly bricking it, we had to have it unlocked and I was told under no circumstance should I update it and guess what I did? Anyhow, I managed to get it sorted. But, what I found interesting was the content of the phone prior.

My mate, who gave us the phone, is a food technologist. The phone was full of food type apps; Waitrose, nutrition calculators, shopping lists etc. It made me wonder what our phones/ipads say about us.

I’m not a huge fan of memes but would love to know what

@dadyougeek

@the_moiderer

@annieqpr

@mattbigg’s

@dannynic

@R2UK

phones says about them!  Plus, it’s a great way to share good apps.

According to my phone I’m a social media addict! For Christsake, I have a separate folder for it with 3 twitter apps!

I’m a mum! Phone has been a godsend, especially when you want one more sneaky drink in the pub.

Lastly, I’m a Libra, slightly OCD and possibly anal. I have at least 8 folders on the first screen! Check out the categories: travel, entertainment, blogging, social media etc. I do worry myself sometimes.

Even if I haven’t tagged you do join in!  If you’ve never done a meme before, basically you write a post similar to this, link back here and then tag a few friends.

Toddlers Seek and Find App – Review

Available from I-tunes for .59p

I hate writing bad reviews, but I was sent the Toddlers Seek and Find App by Wonderkind to try out.  I have to say I wasn’t that impressed.  It really doesn’t do that much.  There are 3 areas to explore:  My Farm, My Forest and My Zoo.  Children just click on the animals in the picture and the animal will then do something.  For example, a deer eats the vegetables in the garden, the elephant sprays water and in the case of the pig it farts in the sheep’s face.  However, I must admit my daughter thought this was hysterical.  I think the worst thing as you will see by the image is that they spelled Toddler wrong???

So overall here is what we thought:

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox

Available from itunes for 59p

I have to say that I really like this app, if you can ignore the annoying American accent.  I’d seen it recommended on a few websites and now that we’ve had a play with it I’m surprised the Sunday Times didn’t feature it in it’s Top 500 apps.  It’s perfect for Madame who is 3.5.  It has a combination of matching, sorting, colours, number and letter recognition and problem solving!
